We thought you might enjoy knowing the story behind this collection of songs. In 1996, Bryan was invited by a Campus Ministry organization at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI to become part of an evangelism experiment. Bryan was asked to perform once a week in an outdoor area (called "the library mall") where many university students hang out during the lunch hour when the weather is nice. The idea was to offer a Christian witness through music and words that would differ in tone and theology from some of the angry and judgmental preaching of the "open air evangelists" who often preach in this outdoor venue. Shortly after Bryan began participating in this evangelical experiment, he met Christian singer/songwriter Joe Steinke, who at the time was also involved in some campus ministry at the University of Wisconsin. Bryan and Joe quickly became close friends, and felt led to "get out there" and sing some songs together. At some point, we (Joe and Bryan) came up with the idea of writing a bunch of songs which would serve as a conceptual bridge to an exploration of the person of Jesus. We wanted each song to focus on an idea or concept or attribute which could be seen in the life and teachings of Jesus. We eventually wound up with the 10 words which are the titles of the songs on this recording. The ten words are: Compassion
* Mystery * Truth * Redemption
* Justice We played these songs (and several others) at a number of venues at the University of Wisconsin for about two years. It was a great experience for us, and a very challenging environment in which to try to be an overtly Christian presence. We hope and pray that God is continuing to water whatever seeds may have been sown through all those street level performances and ensuing conversations. We were often asked for recorded copies of the songs we sang during these lunch hour concerts. We finally decided to put this recording together and once it was in the works, we were contacted by some folks from Augsburg Fortress Publishers who were interested in releasing a study guide based on the music from this recording. That guide, written by Maren C.Tirabassi. is also now available either directly from Augsburg Fortress or from us. We're pretty happy with the way this leader's guide turns "words to the Song..." into a Christian Education resource. Well, now you
know the story behind these songs. We hope you enjoy listening to
the tunes. We tried not to overproduce them once we got into the studio.
Hopefully you can still get the basic feel of a couple of guys with
acoustic guitars trying to pray their way into some music that will
help people take a "long look" at Jesus. Back to New CD Page | Samples | Lyrics . |
