"Fully Alive!" is my most recent solo release and I'm really thrilled with how it turned out.

This is my first solo "singer/songwriter" album since "Justice and Love," and it contains a bunch of tunes that many folks have been waiting for me to record for a long time. The record is diverse and takes the listener on a journey to many different musical landscapes and lyrical moods.  There are plenty of gentle encouraging songs such as "In God's Hands" (the song I wrote for my mother when she was terminally ill) and "I Am Welcome" in this collection. But there are also some challenging and prophetic songs on the record which I think are likely to generate some interesting conversations and responses.

This Children's book is based on the story I (Bryan) often tell that led me to write the well known children's song, "Wherever Love Is" about 25 years ago. You can listen to a clip of that simple song on my "Bugs For Lunch!" recording and download that tune here on my site or on i-tunes.

When my daughter Emma was about 3 years old she asked me, "Daddy, where is God?" At first I told her that God is everywhere, but I could tell that didn't help her much. I then remembered the verse from 1 John 4 that tells us that "God is love." So I told Emma that since the Bible says that God is Love, then God is wherever love is. A few minutes later she then exclaimed in her ridiculously cute 3 year old voice, "Daddy, God's in me!" And when I said, "You're right--how do you know?" She blurted out, "Because I love you Daddy!" I know...almost too sweet to be true but then again, you've never met my daugther--she's been that sweet since she entered this world and still is all these years later. In fact she now often sings her own kids to sleep with the song based on this story.

So that's how "Wherever Love Is" came into being. When I decided to turn this story into a children's book, I contacted my good friend Sherry Favre whom I've known for over 20 years and asked her if she would be interested in writing some children's books with me. Sherry is a gifted youth minister, writer, and all around creative whirlwind and I knew she would be a perfect co-writer for a series of books based on my children's music. This is our first release and we're thrilled to be making this available to all of you!

Based on that conversation I had with my daughter all those years ago, this book starts out with a simple exchange at the end of the day between a little girl and her dad in response to her question, "Where is God?" She then asks lots of silly questions about where God might be, and ends up with the wonderful realization that God is inside her because her own heart is full of love for her dad, her mom, her dog, and so many other things.

This little book will make a perfect gift for children and parents and grandparents--for anyone with children in their lives whom they want to remind that the best place to find God is "wherever love is." A great gift for a newborn, for the occassion of baptisms, or just for a fun and meaningful bedtime book to help end the day by reminding children that God is with them and within them always in the love that they give and receive.

Back to "December Recollections"...

The Steinway piano you'll see on the CD tray of this recording (or in the "gallery" section of my website) is the instrument on which I arranged and recorded these “December Recollections.” It came into my family’s life in about 1920, when my grandfather promised he would buy his rather shy bride a piano if she would enter a local vocal contest. She entered the contest and won first prize, and I grew up banging on this piano at my grandparent’s house. I then loved playing and composing on it at my mom's home for years, and then shortly before she died she had it rebuilt and sent it as a gift to me. Unfortunately it was damaged in the rebuilding process, and I was told it would never be “healthy” enough to use for recording. But I’ve had some work done on it bit by bit, and in October, 2015 realized it might just be worthy of some recording. I put some good mics on it and sure enough…it sounded great.

I got inspired to mess around with some of the hymns of the Advent and Christmas season, and “December Recollections” spilled out in about a week. I’m delighted to share this piano and these simple arrangements with you. Hopefully these gentle renditions of some of the Advent and Christmas classics will be some nice background music as you go about your holiday traditions, or perhaps provide a musical framework for some quiet medition and reflection.

I only wish my mother could hear this project... She didn't play herself, but always loved hearing that piano. Who knows, perhaps she's well aware of this project and other songs of mine that were written on this instrument such as "In God's Hands" and "The Nightingale and the Rose" on my Spring 2015 release "Fully Alive." Love you mom. Thanks so much for this beautiful piano.

A wonderful ministry organization called "Just Faith" gets the credit for taking the initiative to put this compilation of "Songs For Justice Walkers" together. Quite simply, Just Faith wanted to make almost all of my "justice" related songs available on one CD in order to use with their "Just Parish" program. They chose 14 songs of mine that had been previously recorded, and I added 4 songs which had not been recorded (Sarah's Song, I See You, Green World, and Stand With You) previously. The result is this 18 song compilation which is now among my best selling recordings. I hope these songs are meaningful and moving to you...

Youth Ministry Research Report

In 2000 I did some research on what I considered to be "thriving youth ministries" throughout the U.S. I summarized this research in a 20 minute report I gave to the Wisconsin Conference of the UCC in June, 2000. The report was called, "Ten Marks of Thriving Youth Ministries." Yeah that was 18 years ago now, but the basic findings are still relevant and many are still finding it very useful, so that's why I'm making it available here.

And remember, I've got two albums "Come As U R!" and "Artist's Hand" that still work great with teens.  

They both come with study guides that turn each song into a youth group or confirmation class study session.

2. A CD that has all 24 songs from the songbook fully produced the way I would do them with a worship band in church. This way you can hear what they're supposed to sound like, and band members can get some ideas for their parts and the groove of the song. Plus, it's a great listen as an album on it's own. ($15)
3. A CD that has the full band music for each song on it without the vocals for churches that might want to sing along with the CD by running the CD through their sound system. Great for churches that want a more "rock" sounding worship at times but that don't have musicians to play the songs. ($12)
4. A CD that has each song in PowerPoint for churches that have big screens and are projecting lyrics. The lyrics are also in Word Documents so that the lyrics can be printed in other formats or for other purposes. This CD also includes PDF files of bulletin insert size lead sheets (the music and lyrics) for each song so that the notation can be included as an insert in church bulletins. This makes it much easier for the congregations to learn some of the songs—at least for those who can read musical notation. ($10 by itself)

This is still one of my favorite all around albums that I've released. It contains a diverse selection of songs both musically and lyrically, and includes some tunes which deal with social justice issues ("Dear Mr. Eisner"--a bit out of date but still very much "on time"-- and "I'd Just Like to Know" for example) and also some songs that explore the intimacy of being in a personal relationship with God.

A Few Words About This Book...

For those of you who may be new to me, The 6 Marks of Progressive Christian Worship Music is primarily a resource for pastors and musicians in tradtional or "mainline" churches (Presbyterian, United Church of Christ, Dicsiples of Christ, Methodist, Episcopalian, ELCA Lutheran, and some Roman Catholics) that are using "contemporary music" in their worship services.

Basically, The 6 Marks of Progressive Christian Worship Music is my attempt to explain to church musicians why many of their more mainline and/or progressive pastors and church members often struggle with the language and theology of the "praise and worship" music that worship bands play.

Hopefully this book will help shift the energy of the conversation that so often takes place among mainline church folks regarding "contemporary praise and worship music" from a negative place to a positive and creative place.

Instead of simply complaining about what we don't like in praise and worship music, The 6 Marks of Progressive Christian Worship Music is an invitation to get clear on what kind of new music and lyrics we'd love to bring into our churches at this point in history.

The 6 Marks of Progressive Christian Worship Music includes questions after each chapter to facilitate discussion among pastors, church musicians, and anyone else interested in reading the book as a group. The writing style is very conversational and easy to understand.

Please be gently and playfully warned!! Some of the content of The 6 Marks... may strike you as a bit radical and controversial, especially when it comes to what is and is not emphasized in Progressive Christian Worship Music. Most folks who have read the book seem to be enjoying the way in which I explore some of these complex theological issues, but I just want you to know that some of the content may be new and challenging.

I've been greatly encouraged by the responses I've received to the book so far!

I've been pleasantly surprised to find that many folks who are not pastors or musicians are finding the book to be stimulating and meaningful.

This is a collection of songs for children ages 0 through about 10 or so. The songs are mostly uptempo, participatory, and lots of fun. Musically, "Worms In the Bread!" is very similar to "Bugs For Lunch!" The primary difference between the two recordings is that "Worms..." is based mostly on stories and themes from the Hebrew Bible (what Christians often refer to as the "Old Testament"), and "Bugs" is based mostly on New Testatment stories and themes. I deliberately did not "Christianize" any of the lyrics in this collection so that Jewish children could enjoy these songs without being unnecessarily pointed toward the Christian scriptures. Parents--my apologies in advance if your kids want to hear these songs a whole lot more often than you do--especially in the car!!! But I hope and pray that you'll have a blast singing the scriptures together with the kids in your life!

This is a live recording of a concert I did at the annual meeting of the Wisconsin Conference of the United Church of Christ in 1991. The concert took place in the beautiful chapel at Lawrence University in Appleton, WI on June 18, 1991. I was accompanied by Bert Dalton on piano and his brother Larry Dalton on stand up acoustic bass. They are amazingly talented musicians and their artistry literally transformed a number of my songs. This live recording also features some of the stories I tell when I set up songs in concerts, but each story is on it's own track so you can easily skip them after you've heard them once or twice and get right to the next song.

This album is different from most of my recordings in a number of ways. First, these songs were all co-written with my good friend Joe Steinke. Joe is a great acoustic guitarist and a number of the songs show off his guitar playing, especially the final track called, "Freedom." These songs were also written to be sung at various public venues during a two year evangelism experiment at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Each song has a one word title, a very direct lyric, and the songs were written to be an explanation of the concept of the title word and to also build a bridge between this concept and the life and witness of Jesus. These songs led to a number of great conversations at the UW. I hope you find them both musically and lyrically provocative.

The entire songbook, which you can have shipped to you, is the most cost effective way to purchase the music for all 24 songs in this collection. It includes full piano arrangements for each song, guitar lead sheets, guitar chord diagrams of all the chords I use, the lyrics with simple guitar chords written above the words, a description of each song and how it could be used in a worship service, and a "split track" CD that features the piano arrangement on the left side and the acoustic guitar accompaniment on the right side so that musicians can hear what the arrangements are supposed to sound like (there are no vocals on this piano/guitar CD).

Over the years I've been asked a zillion times whether or not I have any music available for "contemporary worship" that would work well in traditional or so-called "mainline Protestant" churches. Many folks shared that while they wanted to bring more modern music into their worship services, they were having a very hard time finding songs in the world of "contemporary praise and worship music" that fit who they were theologically. You know - songs that would focus on making this world a better place, songs that would be inclusive in terms of language and God images, and songs that reflect an awareness of the traditions and "heart language" of mainline Protestant denominations. Well, this is my first attempt at providing a collection of songs in response to these many requests, and I hope and pray that there are many songs in this book which you and your congregation will love to sing together.
